Thibau Nys's Vuelta a España bid jeopardized by infection and lingering injury

Belgian cyclist Thibau Nys has missed several key races this season. A knee injury forced him out of the Giro d'Italia debut and limited his spring program. More recently, an infection kept him from the Clasica San Sebastián and the Vuelta a Burgos, leaving his preparation for the Vuelta a España in doubt.

Lidl‑Trek and Nys’s father, former world champion Sven Nys, say the priority is a full recovery before any further racing. The exact nature of the infection has not been disclosed, though it is not mycoplasma and is expected to improve relatively quickly. With the Vuelta starting on 22 August, the cyclist’s participation remains uncertain, and his ability to perform at his usual level is in question.
