Thibaut Courtois on Real Madrid contract, future successor and Mourinho’s direct style

Thibaut Courtois, the 34‑year‑old Belgian goalkeeper, explained that Real Madrid only grants one‑year extensions to players once they turn 30. He is under contract until June 2027, an extension granted in the summer of 2025, and said he is “relaxed” about his future but noted the club will eventually have to consider his successor. He mentioned Ukrainian keeper Andriy Lunin as a likely internal option.

Courtois also spoke about new Real Madrid manager José Mourinho, recalling their time together at Chelsea. He described Mourinho as “very direct” and said he shares that trait. Courtois recounted an episode when Mourinho benched him against Everton, after which he returned to make several crucial saves, emphasizing a good relationship with the Portuguese coach.

The remarks were made at a Belgium national‑team press conference ahead of the World Cup 2026 opener against Egypt in Seattle. Courtois hinted he may retire from international football after the tournament.
