Thierry Malandain to step down as director of Malandain Ballet Biarritz

Choreographer Thierry Malandain will step down from his position as director of the Malandain Ballet Biarritz on December 31. Having founded the National Choreographic Center in 1998 at the request of the French Ministry of Culture, Malandain leaves behind the first contemporary center of a classical style.

Over a career spanning forty years, the 67-year-old artist has created approximately 90 pieces, characterized by a neo-classical style. His repertoire includes reinterpretations of tales like ‘Cendrillon’, classics such as ‘L’Oiseau de feu’, and contemporary works like ‘Sinfonia’.

While Malandain stated he no longer feels the desire to create new works, he will not retire from the dance world. He intends to focus on artistic mentorship and supporting other performers. His company, Temps présent, has been reactivated to facilitate this work, which includes upcoming productions of his pieces ‘Une dernière chanson’ at the Opéra de Metz and ‘Nocturnes’ at the Opéra de Paris.
