Think Pink environmental scandal leaves waste piles across Sweden

Following the conclusion of Sweden’s largest environmental crime trial, significant amounts of waste dumped by the bankrupt company Think Pink remain at at least nine locations in Central Sweden. The Svea Court of Appeal sentenced five individuals to prison and ordered nearly 200 million SEK in damages for 19 environmental crimes, 18 of which were classified as serious. The Supreme Court has declined to review the case, effectively finalizing the legal proceedings.

The largest waste pile, weighing approximately 60,000 tons, is located in Kagghamra, Botkyrka municipality. This site was the scene of a massive fire from December 2020 to February 2021, which caused heavy smoke over southern Stockholm and significantly impacted air quality. A Stockholm University study confirmed elevated levels of harmful chemicals, including heavy metals like lead and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, during the fire.

Local residents reported severe health impacts, including daily headaches and the necessity of wearing protective masks to breathe while performing outdoor tasks. Samples taken from the pile have revealed the presence of toxic, carcinogenic, and fertility-impairing substances, as well as PFAS and other hazardous materials. Botkyrka municipality is seeking state funding for the cleanup, though management of the Kagghamra site is not expected to begin before 2028.
