Third-party risk management shifts toward automated discovery

Modern third-party risk management (TPRM) is shifting away from traditional annual questionnaires toward real-time monitoring and automated discovery. Research indicates that static assessments are increasingly insufficient because vendor environments, data flows, and downstream dependencies change more rapidly than yearly review cycles can track.

Data from ISACA suggests that 30% of breaches involve third-party vendors, yet many organizations still rely on compliance-focused assessments rather than incident prevention. Furthermore, a study by Vanta highlights a significant visibility gap: more than half of a typical organization’s vendor footprint is now considered shadow IT, with only 2% of those vendors receiving security reviews. Additionally, 70% of companies are reportedly running shadow AI that has not been assessed.

To address these vulnerabilities, enterprises are evaluating TPRM platforms based on their ability to automate the discovery of shadow IT and AI, scale review efforts without proportional increases in headcount, and integrate findings into broader risk programs.
