Third Way launches $15 million campaign against Democratic socialist candidates

The centrist organization Third Way has announced a $15 million campaign effort aimed at opposing Democratic Socialist of America (DSA) candidates between now and 2028. This follows the primary victory of Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan. Leaders of Third Way, Jon Cowan and Matt Bennett, have argued in an op-ed that the Democratic Party’s challenges are linked to extreme politics, a claim that has drawn criticism regarding the party's recent centrist leadership.

Analysis of recent primary elections suggests a geographic and demographic divide in voter behavior. In the Michigan Democratic senatorial primary, candidates like Abdul El-Sayed saw strength in urban and university-heavy areas, while Haley Stevens performed better in rural counties and among Black voters in Detroit. Similarly, in the Wisconsin Democratic gubernatorial race, David Crowley won Milwaukee and rural counties, whereas Francesca Hong performed better in areas with higher concentrations of colleges and universities. These patterns have fueled debates regarding the ability of left-leaning candidates to connect with working-class voters outside of urban centers.
