Thirlwall Inquiry details Lucy Letby’s behavior following infant deaths

The Thirlwall Inquiry has released its report regarding the deaths of infants at the Countess of Chester Hospital, highlighting the behavior of former nurse Lucy Letby. The inquiry detailed Letby’s reaction to the death of a premature baby, noting she told a colleague, “you’ll never guess what just happened,” immediately following the incident. Lady Justice Thirlwall described this as “disturbing behaviour” that suggested Letby viewed the deaths as “exciting” events.

The report also noted instances of “inappropriate jolliness” in Letby’s interactions with grieving parents. Beyond her personal conduct, the inquiry addressed broader issues of hospital management and patient safety, offering 14 recommendations to prevent future failures.

However, the investigation has faced scrutiny regarding its scope. Some reports indicate that the inquiry did not explore alternative theories regarding the causes of the infants' deaths, despite a panel of medical experts stating there was no medical evidence directly implicating Letby in certain cases. Additionally, there were noted tensions within the hospital unit, where the testimony of nurses was reportedly discounted in favor of physicians.
