Thiruvananthapuram Zoo welcomes zebras after nine-year absence

Three zebras have arrived at the Thiruvananthapuram Zoological Garden after a nine-year absence. The animals—a five-year-old male and two three-year-old females—were transferred from the Greens Zoological, Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre at Vantara in Gujarat.

The group completed a two-and-a-half-day road journey in a specialized climate-controlled livestock ambulance, accompanied by a 13-member team and a police escort. The zoo had not housed zebras since 2017, following the death of its last resident, Sita.

State Health and Devaswom Minister K. Muraleedharan described the arrival as an “Onam gift” for visitors. The zebras will undergo a 21-day open quarantine, allowing the public to view them immediately. To assist with their dietary transition, a two-week supply of specialized Timothy grass was provided to be mixed with local hay.
