Thélyson Orélien faces AI controversy over bestselling novel

Thélyson Orélien, a 38-year-old Canadian-Haitian author, is at the center of a major literary controversy regarding his novel, C'était ça ou mourir. Following accusations from an anonymous account on X that the text was generated using artificial intelligence, the work has faced scrutiny through AI detection tools like Pangram.

Despite the controversy and accusations of plagiarism, the novel remains a commercial success in France. According to GfK data, the book has sold 64,966 copies in six weeks, including 18,256 copies in the week of September 21 to September 27, making it the top-selling novel in the country.

As a result of the allegations, Orélien has been removed from the Goncourt prize selection and has cut short his promotional tour in France, returning to Quebec. The author has denied attempts to silence him and stated he will address the situation once the situation calms down.
