Thélyson Orélien wins Prix Première Plume for debut novel

Haitian-origin writer Thélyson Orélien has received significant literary acclaim for his debut novel, ‘C’était ça ou mourir’, published by Grasset. The book has secured three major distinctions: the Prix Méduse, the Prix Strasbourg Espoir CIC, and the Prix Première Plume 2026, which was awarded unanimously by its jury.

The novel follows Jonas Dorléon, a history teacher fleeing gang violence in Port-au-Prince. His journey takes him through the Dominican Republic, Brazil, and Mexico as he seeks to reach Canada. The narrative incorporates migrant testimonies to explore themes of exile, memory, and survival.

Since its release on August 19, 2026, the book has sold over 10,700 copies in France. It has also been named a finalist for the Prix du Roman Fnac 2026, with the winner to be announced on September 21.
