Thodoris Katsounopoulos, Greek Educator and ELAS Founder, Dies at 51

Thodoris Katsounopoulos, a 51‑year‑old teacher of physical education and sociology, died on Tuesday, 4 August while with his family. He was a founding member of the Education sector of the Greek Left Alliance (ELAS) and an elected representative on the Central Council of Secondary Education (KYSDE). Katsounopoulos had a long record of union activity, serving in roles such as elected member of the PYSDE in Athens, president of the B ELME of West Attica, and active participant in special‑education structures.

The Cooperating Educational Movements (SYNEK) announced his death and expressed deep sorrow, noting his “honest, self‑less” commitment to public schooling and teachers’ rights. ELAS also issued a condolence message, describing him as a “rare, sensitive, and noble educator” whose sudden loss leaves a void in education and social life. Funeral arrangements were to be announced later.
