Thodoris Libanios refers election fraud allegations to prosecutor
Greek Interior Minister Thodoris Libanios has referred allegations of election fraud, made by Kyriakos Velopoulos, president of Elliniki Lysi, to the prosecutor for investigation. Speaking in Parliament, Libanios stated he would not allow any doubt to remain regarding the credibility of the electoral process.
The discussion arose following a parliamentary question from independent MP Marios Salmas concerning the role of the company Singular in transmitting election results and its existing contracts with the state. Salmas clarified that he was not questioning the integrity of the election process or the technical expertise of Singular, but rather raised concerns about whether a company holding large public contracts should be the sole provider for transmitting election results. He suggested the Ministry of Interior should initiate competitive bidding processes to allow other IT companies to participate.
Libanios responded by noting that since 1981, successive governments have utilized the company for such tasks, though he clarified that the company's role is to act as an information channel for rapid results rather than being the official source. He emphasized that official results are issued by the courts of first instance and that the central electoral committee transmits the final protocols to the Supreme Court.
