Thomas Bangalter discusses challenges scoring Tron: Legacy
Thomas Bangalter, one half of the electronic duo Daft Punk, has described the process of composing the score for the 2010 Disney film 'Tron: Legacy' as a "depressing" and "limiting" experience.
Speaking on 'The A24 Podcast,' Bangalter explained that while director Joseph Kosinski initially requested an entirely electronic score, the duo pushed to incorporate a full symphony orchestra. Bangalter noted that the creative process was hindered by technical challenges, specifically that sounds in the medium frequency range often conflicted with film dialogue.
He reflected on the difficulty of balancing musical ideas with the necessity of film scoring, stating, "the whole thing about film score music is to take a step back and have the performance and not be in the way." He described the necessity of reverting to more traditional methods as a frustrating aspect of the work.
The 'Tron: Legacy' soundtrack marked Daft Punk's first full film score. The duo officially ended their musical partnership in 2021 following an announcement via a video titled "Epilogue."
