Thomas Hitzlsperger discusses the struggle before his coming out
Former professional footballer Thomas Hitzlsperger has shared details regarding the emotional and physical toll experienced prior to his coming out in January 2014. Speaking on the podcast ‘Wie geht's? Mit Robin Gosens’, the 44-year-old described the period as ‘hell’.
Hitzlsperger noted that he felt out of place in the locker room environment during his late twenties. He highlighted a significant lack of trustworthy individuals within his clubs to whom he could confide his sexuality. He specifically mentioned that the stress intensified after leaving VfB Stuttgart in January 2010 and moving to Lazio, where the pressure to conform to social expectations led to physical symptoms, including sudden sweating attacks.
