Smithsonian DNA study links Thomas Jefferson to Sally Hemings

Researchers at the Smithsonian Institution have released findings from a 15-year study suggesting that Thomas Jefferson, the third U.S. President, fathered children with Sally Hemings, an enslaved woman at his Monticello estate.

Led by Smithsonian scholar Richard Kurin, the team used advanced techniques to sequence DNA from a lock of Jefferson's hair, which was preserved from his deathbed in 1826. The researchers compared this genetic material with DNA samples from 13 living descendants of both the Hemings and Jefferson families.

The study concludes there is a 99.9% probability that Jefferson fathered Hemings's children, specifically noting a less than 0.001% chance that he was not the biological father of Madison and Eston Hemings. These findings are detailed in Kurin's upcoming book, 'History by a Hair: Thomas Jefferson, Sally Hemings & Solving a 200-Year-Old Mystery'.
