Thomas Jefferson DNA test provides proof of children with Sally Hemings

Researchers at the Smithsonian Institution have utilized advanced DNA sequencing to provide what they describe as ‘extraordinary proof’ that Thomas Jefferson fathered children with Sally Hemings, an enslaved woman. The findings are based on the genome of the third U.S. president, which was decoded from a lock of hair taken from his deathbed.

The 15-year investigative project involved a multidisciplinary team of archaeologists, genealogists, molecular geneticists, and historians. They compared Jefferson’s genome with DNA samples from 13 individuals believed to be his living descendants. Richard Kurin, a Smithsonian scholar who led the project, stated that while there may not be an official institutional position, the evidence is ‘compelling’ and ‘very clear.’

Historically, the theory that Jefferson had children with Hemings was often dismissed by historians who felt it did not align with his character. However, the new genetic evidence aims to resolve long-standing debates regarding race, slavery, and the legacy of the Founding Fathers. The groundbreaking genomic techniques developed during this study have also been applied to criminal investigations, including the identification of the Golden State Killer and the Gilgo Beach serial killer.
