Thomas Mapfumo returns to Zimbabwe for US$1 million performances

Chimurenga music legend Thomas Mapfumo has returned to Zimbabwe after an eight-year absence following a US$1 million performance agreement with the late businessman Wicknell Chivayo.

Mapfumo arrived at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in Harare to a high-profile reception involving government officials and tourism representatives. The payment, which Chivayo previously announced would make the musician an ‘official millionaire’ in US dollars, was intended to cover two private engagements: a performance at musician Jah Prayzah’s wedding and a second event related to Chivayo’s birthday or housewarming.

Following the death of Wicknell Chivayo in a helicopter crash, the scheduled events were disrupted. Mapfumo has confirmed that he received the full US$1 million fee prior to his travel and has vowed to honor his contractual obligations by performing at Jah Prayzah’s wedding once it is rescheduled.
