Thomas Meunier joins Sunderland after Lille contract dispute

Belgian international Thomas Meunier has joined Sunderland following his departure from LOSC Lille. Meunier revealed that his exit from the French club was primarily due to a failure to reach a contract agreement, rather than a personal desire to leave.

In an interview with L’Équipe, Meunier expressed disappointment regarding Lille president Olivier Létang. While a contract extension was discussed, Meunier stated, "After two very good seasons, I was expecting a little effort from Olivier." He noted that while Létang made an offer, the club was unable to meet his expectations for financial recognition following his recent performances.

Meunier ultimately chose to join Sunderland, citing the English club's determination and his desire to play in the Premier League. He explained that the Black Cats provided all the necessary conditions to facilitate his move, leading him to sign shortly after a brief period of reflection.
