European Parliament rapporteur for North Macedonia, Thomas Vajc, has called on European Commissioner Marta Kos to engage in diplomatic efforts to resolve the bilateral dispute between North Macedonia and Bulgaria. Speaking before the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), Vajc cited the positive dialogue between Croatia and Montenegro as a model for resolving bilateral issues without hindering EU accession progress.

Vajc noted that certain issues, such as the inclusion of minorities, have reached the European level and require constitutional amendments. He emphasized that the only way to resolve the current deadlock is through direct dialogue between the governments of Bulgaria and North Macedonia.

Separately, North Macedonian President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova stated at an EU enlargement summit that Bulgaria is stalling the country's European path by demanding explicit recognition of the Bulgarian minority in the Macedonian Constitution. Siljanovska-Davkova noted that the country has changed its Constitution 26 times, often under external pressure, and asserted that new amendments cannot be promised without citizen consent, noting that 80 percent of citizens oppose the proposed changes.
