Thongmang village sinkhole victims to receive LAK 147.93 billion compensation

Authorities in Vientiane have announced a compensation package totaling LAK 147.93 billion (approximately USD 6.5 million) for residents of Thongmang village in the Xaythany district. The funds are intended to address damages caused by sinkholes and ground subsidence linked to local potash mining activities.

The compensation breakdown includes LAK 97 billion for damaged land, LAK 29.34 billion for crops and agricultural production, and LAK 13.82 billion for damaged buildings and structures. An additional LAK 7.67 billion is allocated for the repair of irrigation systems and roads.

The decision follows several major ground collapses, including a significant incident in January that left four people missing and forced the evacuation of 38 households. Potash mining in the area was halted in July 2025 to allow for stabilization work. While the framework for compensation has been established, officials have not yet specified when payments will be distributed or if the package covers the families of the missing villagers.
