Thorium identified as abundant alternative to uranium for nuclear energy

Thorium is being highlighted as a potentially cleaner and more abundant alternative to uranium for nuclear energy. Advocates, including John Kutsch of the Thorium Energy Alliance, note that thorium is approximately 2,000 times more abundant on Earth than uranium and does not require enrichment. Additionally, thorium can be recovered as a byproduct of rare earth and critical materials processing from minerals like monazite.

While thorium offers environmental advantages, such as producing fewer long-lived radioactive materials compared to conventional uranium cycles, it faces technical hurdles. Natural thorium-232 must first be converted into uranium-233 to power a reactor, requiring an initial nuclear fuel source to start the reaction.

While the United States continues to rely primarily on uranium, China is making strides in the field. Researchers in the Gobi Desert reportedly achieved thorium-to-uranium fuel conversion in 2025, according to the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
