Thoroughbred horse in Los Angeles tests positive for EHM

An 18-year-old Thoroughbred gelding in Los Angeles County has tested positive for equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy (EHM) caused by equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1), according to the California Department of Food and Agriculture.

The horse exhibited neurologic signs and is currently isolated at its home premises while recovering. As a precaution, 37 potentially exposed horses at the same location have been placed under quarantine.

EHV-1 is a highly contagious virus in equids that can lead to respiratory disease, abortions in broodmares, and EHM. Neurologic symptoms of EHM often include fever, ataxia, weakness, or paralysis.
