Thorsten Frei Elected as New CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group Leader Amid Internal Personnel Turmoil

Thorsten Frei, a CDU member, was elected with 91.9% of votes in a special session to succeed Jens Spahn as the chair of the Union (CDU/CSU) parliamentary group. Frei warned party members not to focus excessively on internal disputes, stressing the need to work for the country amid a difficult personnel reshuffle in government and the party.

In parallel, CSU group leader Alexander Hoffmann highlighted the effort to secure broad support for Frei ahead of the vote, emphasizing confidence in his leadership and the importance of stabilising the faction’s internal dynamics.
