Thorsten Moriße fails legal challenge to rejoin Wilhelmshaven mayoral race
Thorsten Moriße, an AfD candidate for mayor in Wilhelmshaven, has failed in an emergency application to the Administrative Court of Oldenburg to overturn his exclusion from the upcoming local elections. The court ruled that the legality of his admission would only be reviewed after the election has taken place.
The Lower Saxony Ministry of the Interior justified the exclusion by stating that Moriße does not provide the “required assurance” of commitment to the free democratic basic order. This decision is based on his active role and leadership within the AfD state association in Lower Saxony.
Reports indicate that Moriße is not currently under observation by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution. Legal challenges have also been filed by three other AfD politicians excluded from the municipal elections in Lower Saxony, though similar emergency motions by other candidates have also been rejected by the court.
