Thousands of cranes flew over the Inntal region in Tyrol, Austria, during the night between Saturday and Sunday. The massive migration caused a stir among local residents due to the loud contact calls made by the birds to maintain group cohesion during flight.
Katharina Bergmüller from the conservation organization Birdlife noted that a migration of this scale is a novelty for the region. While cranes have been migrating through Austria in larger numbers for approximately ten years, this specific event was unusual. The birds appeared somewhat disoriented, initially flying from east to west before turning back toward the east, likely due to cloud cover affecting their navigation through the mountains.
Although cranes do not typically breed in Austria, recent evidence of breeding has been found in eastern Austria. The migration patterns of these birds are influenced by weather, wind conditions, and the availability of resting sites such as meadows and wetlands.
