Three adolescent dolphins euthanized after Sandy Hook marsh rescue
Three adolescent Common dolphins—one male and two females—were euthanized after being rescued from a marsh at Sandy Hook. Marine mammal experts from the Marine Mammal Stranding Center (MMSC) reported that the dolphins were found weak, lethargic, and dangerously thin after becoming trapped in the marsh grass near a shallow creek.
The rescue operation involved volunteers from the MMSC Stranding Team, Sea Bright Fire and Rescue, and National Park Service staff, who transported the animals to the beach via stretchers for medical evaluation. Due to their poor physical condition, veterinarians determined euthanasia was necessary.
Necropsies are planned at a New Jersey laboratory to investigate the cause of the stranding. MMSC officials noted that the dolphins may be the same individuals previously reported in the Shrewsbury River.
