Three arrested after Argentine fan killed during World Cup celebration in Cañuelas

Franco De Pauli died on 7 July after receiving a severe head injury while trying to separate participants in a fight that broke out during celebrations in Cañuelas, Buenos Aires Province, following Argentina's 2‑1 victory over Egypt that secured a quarter‑final spot in the 2026 World Cup.

Police detained three suspects: a 16‑year‑old, a 19‑year‑old and 20‑year‑old Ivan Nahuel Lebrero, who already had a robbery record. The arrests resulted from a thorough review of public‑security camera footage and videos recorded by witnesses, carried out by the Tactical Operations Group. The minor was transferred to a juvenile detention centre in La Plata, while legal proceedings continue under the provisional charge of homicide in a fight.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to analyze additional material and take statements to determine each suspect's level of involvement.
