Germany heat wave triggers wave of drowning deaths

A nine‑year‑old girl in Waldbronn, Baden‑Württemberg, was pulled from a swimming pool by a suction‑pump and rescued after by‑standers performed CPR; she survived without life‑threatening injuries. Across the border in Austria, a sudden surge in the Ill river near Bludenz claimed three lives – a 22‑year‑old man, a ten‑year‑old boy and his 40‑year‑old father – after they were trapped by a water‑wheel’s strong current.

The DLRG highlighted that men are disproportionately affected, attributing the pattern to risk‑taking behaviour and higher cardiovascular strain in heat. The spate of drownings has intensified calls for better heat‑wave preparedness and public safety measures.
