Four dead in Mersin’s Tarsus family drowning incident
On 27 July 2026 a five‑member family entered the sea at Kulak Mahallesi, Tarsus district, Mersin Province, Turkey, to cool off. Strong waves swept the group apart. Father Savaş Öztürk (42), mother Zehra Öztürk (39) and aunt Ceylan Dağşan (30) were found dead. Their 16‑year‑old daughter Fatma Öztürk was rescued, taken to hospital and reported to be in good condition. The 16‑year‑old nephew Halil Öztürk remained missing initially; his body was later recovered, bringing the death toll to four.
Coastal‑guard, AFAD, police and other emergency units launched a coordinated rescue, deploying two coast‑guard boats, one AFAD boat, one police boat and four divers, along with land teams of police, gendarmerie, fire‑fighters and health services.
