Three elephants die from electrocution in West Bengal

Three elephants, consisting of a mother and her two calves, were found dead in a paddy field in Salboni, located in the West Midnapore district of West Bengal. Initial investigations suggest the animals died after coming into contact with a high-tension electricity wire used for an irrigation pump.

Local villagers discovered the bodies on Sunday morning and alerted the forest department. Officials have launched an investigation, noting that the exact cause of death will be confirmed following an autopsy.

Forest department insiders indicated that elephant electrocution is a recurring issue in the Jangalmahal region. The deaths are often linked to farmers installing illegal electric fences or wires around farmlands to protect crops. Similar incidents have been reported recently in the Alipurduar district.
