Three Family Miners Killed by Toxic Gas in Potosí Mine, Bolivia

On July 7, 2026, three miners from the same family died after inhaling toxic gases while cleaning a shaft at a mine operated by the Turqui cooperative in the Potosí department. The victims were identified as Iver Colque Huallpa (24), Edwin Colque Carbajal (33) and Freddy Colque Huallpa (28). They entered the work area around 14:00 without warning of gas accumulation and were later rescued, but showed no vital signs upon removal to the Hospital of Third Level of Potosí. A forensic exam indicated death by chemical asphyxiation from carbon monoxide.

The incident is being investigated by the Special Crime-Fighting Force (FELCC) and the Public Ministry to determine how the gas built up and whether safety responsibilities were breached. Authorities have begun inquiries into the mine's safety conditions and potential liability.
