Karasovići border crossing traffic jam stalls thousands of vehicles

Massive traffic congestion erupted at the Karasovići/Debeli Brijeg border crossings between Bosnia‑Herzegovina and Croatia during the first weekend of August, coinciding with the Ferragosto holiday. Queues stretched for more than 20 km, and drivers faced waiting times of 10 hours to over 28 hours. Authorities recorded roughly 41 500 passengers and 11 700 vehicles on the Bosnian side and about 10 000 vehicles and 40 000 passengers in the surrounding region, overwhelming the capacity of the crossings.

Bosnian officials activated civil‑protection staff in Konavle, and local residents delivered water and opened facilities to stranded motorists. Drivers were urged to avoid long trips in the extreme heat (temperatures reaching 31‑39 °C), to take frequent breaks, and to use alternative routes. Simultaneous road works – including the closure of the M‑5 near Bihać and various highway sections in both countries – and several accidents on Croatian motorways (A1, A2, A3) compounded the delays. The situation remains fluid, with traffic authorities monitoring conditions and advising travelers to check live updates before departing.
