Belgium and France issue orange heat alerts as temperatures near 37 °C

A severe heatwave is affecting large parts of Western Europe in early August 2026. Belgium’s Royal Meteorological Institute placed almost the entire country under an orange heat alert, forecasting temperatures of 32‑36 °C and warning of health risks. France’s Météo‑France issued double yellow vigilance for the Côte‑d’Or department, expecting daytime highs of up to 37 °C and the possibility of violent thunderstorms with wind gusts of 80‑100 km/h and hail. The Netherlands activated its national heat plan, issuing a code‑yellow warning for 28‑36 °C and advising the public to stay hydrated and limit outdoor activity.

Meteorological services across the three nations also warned of strong thunderstorms on Monday‑Tuesday, especially in southern France and the western Netherlands, with the potential for localized heavy rain, hail and strong winds. Health authorities in each country urged people, particularly the elderly and those with chronic conditions, to drink plenty of water, avoid prolonged sun exposure, and seek cooler indoor environments.

The heatwave follows a broader pattern of unusually high temperatures across the region, with forecasts indicating continued warmth into the week and a high probability that 2026 could become the hottest summer on record in Belgium.
