Three institutions hold $603 million in BTC and ETH short positions

Three major financial institutions—Abraxas Capital, Fasanara Capital, and Wintermute—have established significant short positions in Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) on the decentralized derivatives exchange Hyperliquid. According to on-chain analysis from Lookonchain, these positions total approximately $603 million, consisting of 138,569 ETH (valued at $338 million) and 3,425 BTC (valued at $265 million).

Despite recent price increases in the cryptocurrency market resulting in an estimated $75 million in unrealized losses for these positions, the institutions have not reduced their exposure and have even increased some holdings. Analysts suggest these short positions may not necessarily be directional bets on falling prices. Instead, they could serve as hedging strategies used by market makers and asset managers to mitigate price volatility risks associated with their physical (spot) holdings or other exchange exposures.

For instance, wallets linked to Abraxas Capital recently withdrew approximately 73,872 ETH from Binance, suggesting a potential market-neutral strategy where spot purchases are paired with derivative shorts to capture funding fees or liquidity provision profits. However, the possibility remains that these institutions are betting on a market correction due to excessive liquidity-driven gains. The transparency of these large on-chain positions also introduces risks, as they could trigger a ‘short squeeze’ if rising prices force liquidations.
