Three men face sentencing for 2022 Hamilton South murder

Three men are facing a sentencing hearing in the Newcastle Supreme Court following the 2022 murder of 57-year-old Anthony Nugent in Hamilton South. Prosecutors allege that Mohamad Raad, Tyrone Tuli, and Mohd Azlan Latham Asnan acted with murderous intent as retribution after Nugent allegedly defrauded another individual in a fake firearm deal.

While the Crown argues the trio formed a premeditated agreement to kill, defense lawyers contend the shooting was an unplanned, impulsive act. The hearing is also addressing the specific intent of the gunman, Mohamad Raad, at the time the trigger was pulled.

During the proceedings, Nugent’s wife provided a victim impact statement describing the profound trauma of witnessing the aftermath of the shooting and the ongoing emotional distress of living in the same unit where the incident occurred.
