Three migrant smugglers arrested in Crotone, Italy after recent sea landings

Police from the Crotone mobile squad and soldiers of the Guardia di Finanza detained three men suspected of organizing migrant smuggling after two recent arrivals at the Calabrian port. The first landing on 1 June 2026 brought 29 migrants; the second on 4 June 2026 delivered another 57. All non‑EU arrivals received medical care and were moved to the Regional Hub on Isola Capo Rizzuto for identification.

Investigators reconstructed the trafficking routes, which used distinct Libyan and Turkish pathways, and linked the suspects—originating from Sudan, Egypt and Syria—to the boats through refugee testimonies and forensic analysis of migrants’ mobile phones. The judicial authority ordered the arrests; the three men are being held at the Crotone prison while further inquiries aim to uncover additional accomplices and network bases.
