Three ships collide near Ålesund, Norway

Three large vessels—two cargo ships and one tanker—collided in the Valderhaugfjorden near Ålesund, Norway, during the early hours of Sunday. The incident involved ships from Norway, the Faroe Islands, and the Netherlands. One of the involved vessels, the Bergfjord operated by the Dutch company Royal Wagenborg, sustained material damage but reported no cargo leaks.

A major rescue operation was launched following a mayday signal at 01:37, involving a rescue helicopter, the Norwegian frigate KNM Fridtjof Nansen, and various rescue boats. While one vessel began taking on water, the situation was brought under control by Sunday morning. Two ships were brought to a quay, while the third remained at anchor in the fjord.

No injuries were reported among the 30 crew members on board. Authorities noted that the collision occurred in darkness and poor visibility. Preliminary investigations by maritime authorities have ruled out alcohol use among the crews. The exact cause of the collision remains unclear.
