Three visually impaired sisters gain university admission

Three sisters from Gaziantep, Turkey, have successfully gained admission to university despite living with 90 percent visual impairment. Türkan, Sibel, and Hamide Akçin prepared for their exams through the Engelsiz Eğitim ve Kariyer Merkezi, where they received training in Braille, the Quran, and preparation courses for the YKS and E-KPSS exams.

Hamide Akçin, 20, secured a place in the Social Work undergraduate program at Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam University through formal education. Her sisters, Türkan and Sibel, were admitted to the Social Work department at Atatürk University via distance learning.

The sisters' journey involved significant personal milestones; for instance, 34-year-old Türkan Akçin noted that she did not know how to read or write until the age of 25, after which she learned Braille and completed her primary, middle, and high school education through open schooling.
