ThreeTopo app developed to assist rock climbers with 3D navigation

Ben Pearman, a computer science master’s student at the University of Calgary, has developed ThreeTopo, a mobile application designed to assist rock climbers with navigation. The project originated from Pearman’s experiences climbing the Red Shirt route on the south face of Mount Yamnuska in Alberta’s Bow Valley.

To create the app, Pearman used a drone to capture detailed photography of the 240-metre-tall limestone wall, allowing him to build a three-dimensional digital replica of the rock face. The application provides specific navigational instructions, such as when to traverse left or head toward specific bolts, to help climbers avoid getting lost on sheer surfaces. The interface is designed for one-handed use, enabling climbers to consult the tool safely while at rest points during a climb.
