Thrissur prepares for Pulikali tiger dance during Onam

Nine teams are preparing for the traditional Pulikali tiger dance celebrations in Thrissur as part of the Onam festival. The festivities are scheduled for Saturday, with processions beginning at 4 pm from various localities and arriving at Swaraj Round by 5 pm.

Each participating team consists of between 35 and 51 performers, including traditional tiger characters such as striped tigers, black tigers, and leopards, as well as women and children in costume. The event will also feature illuminated tableaux.

The Thrissur Corporation is providing financial assistance of Rs 3.5 lakh to each team, with an initial advance of Rs 1.75 lakh and 120 litres of kerosene provided per team. Prizes for the competition include Rs 70,000 for first place, Rs 60,000 for second, and Rs 50,000 for third, alongside trophies for various categories such as tiger painting and overall presentation.
