Thuringia begins remediation of former gasworks in Pößneck
Environmental Minister Tilo Kummer has announced a new remediation project for an old gasworks site in Pößneck, Thuringia. The project aims to clean up historical industrial contaminants, specifically tar products and residues from gas production dating between 1901 and 1963, to allow the area to be reused for commercial purposes.
The remediation process, which is expected to continue until the end of the year, involves demolishing buildings, removing tar pits, and treating contaminated soil. The current costs for demolition and soil remediation exceed 500,000 euros. Following the soil cleanup, authorities will determine if groundwater remediation is also necessary. This initiative is part of a broader effort in Thuringia to revitalize industrial brownfields and reduce land consumption by repurposing existing sites.
