Thuringia DDR Quiz Reveals East German Song and Holiday Facts
A recent quiz in Thuringia tested knowledge of everyday life in the former East Germany. Participants were asked to identify the missing word in Frank Schöbel’s 1975 hit “Komm, wir malen …”, answer that it is “eine Sonne”. The quiz also covered where many children vacationed – in state‑run Ferienlager – and what footwear was common in summer, the flat “Jesuslatschen”. It highlighted that the Baltic Sea remains a popular destination for former East Germans and noted that Bad Sulza is not a seaside town. The standard length of school holidays was confirmed as eight weeks, and the Lake Balaton in Hungary was identified as a popular meeting place for families split between East and West, known in German as the “Plattensee”. The quiz provided the correct answers and brief explanations for each question.
