Thuringia faces moderate to severe drought across much of the state

Thuringia is experiencing persistent drought conditions, with approximately 55 to 60 percent of the state's area affected by moderate to severe drought. Data from the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research indicates that the southern and central regions are seeing unusual to moderate dryness, while the eastern regions near Gera and Altenburg are facing severe drought. Small areas in the east are even showing signs of extreme drought.

Although the region received an average of 11.2 millimeters of rain over the past week, the soil remains slow to react. Deeper soil layers up to 1.80 meters still reflect the impact of previous dry periods. With temperatures expected to reach up to 28.4 degrees Celsius in the coming days, soil desiccation is likely to continue in the southeastern regions, posing risks to corn production and cattle fodder availability.
