Thuringia weapon owner inspections show regional disparities
Data from the Thuringian Ministry of the Interior reveals significant regional differences in the frequency of firearm inspections within the German state. Between 2010 and early 2025, some regions inspected nearly every registered weapon owner, while in other areas, fewer than one in four owners underwent a check.
According to the ministry's response to an inquiry from the Left Party parliamentary group, identified violations often involve the improper storage of weapons and ammunition, such as failing to use required safes. In Germany, possessing certain firearms requires a weapons ownership card, which is contingent upon the owner's consent to unannounced inspections by authorities.
As of September 2026, National Weapons Register data indicates approximately 28,300 individuals in Thuringia held permits to possess lethal firearms, accounting for a total of roughly 130,600 weapons.
