Thuringian cities demand clearer police responsibilities
Public safety officials from five Thuringian cities—Erfurt, Gera, Jena, Suhl, and Weimar—have issued a joint open letter to Interior Minister Georg Maier regarding increasing security challenges. The officials are specifically addressing the difficulties of managing safety-related incidents during New Year's Eve, particularly those involving pyrotechnics and public threats.
The mayors and regulatory officers emphasized that municipal authorities cannot replace the police. They argued that while local offices can identify violations, such as illegal fireworks, the legal authority, specialized training, and personnel required to handle criminal offenses and active danger prevention must remain the responsibility of the Thuringian State Police.
