Thuringian Forest lynx Vreni spotted with new offspring

A female lynx named Vreni has been spotted with new offspring in a camera trap located south of Ilmenau in the Thuringian Forest. This sighting marks a significant milestone for the “Luchs Thüringen – Europas Luchse vernetzen” project, which aims to re-establish lynx populations and connect habitats across Europe.

Project experts believe the father of the cub is Ionel, another lynx released as part of the same initiative. If confirmed, this would be the first time two animals released through the project have successfully produced offspring together. While Vreni gave birth to two cubs last year, the father of those offspring remains unknown.

The Thuringian Forest serves as a vital stepping stone to connect lynx populations between the Harz mountains and the Bavarian Forest. Currently, project partners estimate there are approximately ten lynxes maintaining established territories in the Thuringian region.
