THW Kiel secures preseason victories despite Faroe Islands travel delays
German handball powerhouse THW Kiel has completed a successful preseason stint at the Wenzel-Nordic-Cup in the Faroe Islands, despite significant travel disruptions caused by heavy fog. The team secured victories against Iceland's Valur Reykjavik (34:24) and Denmark's GOG Gudme (31:27).
The journey to the islands was marked by weather-related delays. An initial attempt to fly from Billund, Denmark, to Vágar was aborted due to dense fog, forcing the aircraft to circle the North Atlantic before returning to land in Aalborg. A second attempt on Friday was successful, though the opening match against H71 Höyvik had to be rescheduled.
As the club prepares for the new Bundesliga season, management and coaching staff are expressing optimism. Following a season where the club failed to qualify for European competition, new head coach Börge Lund and CEO Viktor Szilagyi are focusing on implementing new tactical impulses and improving team communication to return the club to its competitive standards.
