Thwaites Glacier monitoring focuses on sub-ice melting
Scientists are conducting specialized monitoring of the Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica to understand how melting affects global sea levels. Because much of the critical interaction between relatively warm ocean water and the ice base occurs beneath hundreds of meters of ice, researchers from the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration (ITGC) are using advanced techniques to access these hidden areas.
To gather data, research teams have utilized hot-water drilling to create access points through the ice, reaching the oceanic cavities below the ice shelves. Once access is established, scientists deploy oceanographic instruments, including robotic vehicles and sensors that measure conductivity, temperature, pressure, and currents. These measurements are essential for determining the extent to which ocean-ice interactions are accelerating the glacier's melting process, a factor that satellite imagery alone cannot fully capture.
