Thymus gland importance highlighted in new cancer research
New research suggests the thymus gland plays a more significant role in adult health and cancer treatment success than previously understood. While traditionally viewed as an organ that shrinks and loses importance after childhood, recent studies indicate that a well-preserved thymus is linked to lower cancer risks, increased life expectancy, and better responses to certain immunotherapies.
A study conducted by Mass General Brigham, published in the journal ‘Annals of Oncology’, investigated the impact of unintended radiation exposure on the thymus during lung cancer treatment. Analyzing data from 1,107 patients with locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer, lead researcher Hugo Aerts questioned whether the thymus should be actively protected during radiation therapy. Because the thymus is located behind the breastbone, it often receives significant radiation doses when treating nearby thoracic tumors.
