Thyroid cancer awareness: Importance of early diagnosis and modern treatment

In observance of Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month in September, endocrine surgery specialist Prof. Dr. Ahmet Cem Dural has highlighted the importance of early diagnosis and appropriate treatment approaches for thyroid nodules and cancer.

Prof. Dural noted that most thyroid nodules are benign and can often be managed through regular physical examinations and ultrasonography. However, surgery may be necessary for nodules that show suspicion of cancer—characterized by irregular edges, microcalcifications, or solid content—as well as nodules that are large enough to cause physical discomfort, breathing difficulties, or swallowing issues. Additionally, nodules causing hyperthyroidism through excessive hormone production may require surgical or medical intervention.

Advancements in medical technology, including nerve monitoring, infrared imaging, endoscopic and robotic surgery, and ablation treatments, are making thyroid procedures safer and more patient-centered by reducing risks such as voice changes.
